Tips for Silver Jewelry Care

Lapis Lazuli wrapped in sterling silver, April 2018.

I use .925 silver for all of my sterling silver wraps. This silver is acquired from a reputable jewelry supply dealer and is stored in airtight packaging with an anti-tarnish tab to minimize oxidation. Each length of silver wire is polished before being used to create a jewelry piece. Each finished piece is polished again before being packaged for sale.

You can keep your silver jewelry shiny bright by keeping the following tips in mind:

  • Keep your silver jewelry dry.
If you wear it in the shower, be sure to dry it afterwards.
  • Keep your silver jewelry away from chemicals and perspiration.
Don’t wear it in a swimming pool, hot tub, or hot springs – all of these sources have either chlorine or sulfur that can quickly tarnish silver. Allow any lotions or perfumes to dry on your body before putting on your silver jewelry. Take your silver jewelry off before working out at the gym or doing other work that might make you sweat.

When your silver jewelry gets dirty, clean it.
The best tool for this is a microfiber cloth. If your jewelry is very dirty, try using an old soft toothbrush with some dish liquid and water or a mixture of 3 parts water to 1 part baking soda. Be sure to rinse well and then dry with that microfiber cloth.

  • Store your silver jewelry properly.
Because exposure to air can hasten tarnishing, the best place to store silver is in an airtight bag with an anti-tarnish insert. (I provide an anti-tarnish tab with each piece of sterling silver jewelry I sells; additional tabs are available for sale in my online store.)
